/ Learnings from measuring and improving productivity in engineering teams

Description

In an increasingly data and cost-driven environment, empowering engineering teams to be as productive as possible is crucial. But what exactly is productivity and how do we measure it? In this session, we’ll see how Ocado Technology, the development arm of the global technology company Ocado Group, has been studying and improving the productivity of its 150+ teams. These teams build Ocado’s proprietary end-to-end platform for the world’s largest retailers, covering the entire shopping process, from ecommerce, to logistics, supply chain and last mile; this means the software and hardware behind the world's largest retailers; you’ve probably seen our automated warehouses, some of the size of 7 football camps, with bots moving in swarms on top of large metal grids. In this session, we’ve condensed the learnings of decades of data-driven decisions based on a disciplined use of metrics, the creation of an internal platform, and the research for different products to measure productivity: * The landscape of tools measuring productivity and developer experience * Going beyond the DORA metrics * Using quantitative and qualitative metrics, observed and self-reported * The importance of using the right platform: balancing out speed, security, governance * How to use your own metrics Additionally, we’ll cover the perils of measuring individual productivity and attaching goals to metrics, which most tools focus on. This session will help you understand why the measurement should be the means to improve productivity rather than the outcome.
